Around the Blogosphere

It has been a few days since I last posted something. Been busy. I had a person quit a work so I am back to working nights and days.

Here are a few things going on out there which I have found interesting.

Michael Spencer aka as the Internet Monk is a busy man! Not only does he teach and do a couple of blogs, but he also does a couple of podcasts and now is joined with The Old White Guy Steve Brown at Steve Brown Etc. Michael Spencer is blogging at that site also as well as doing interviews.

Steve Brown Etc has become one of my favorite shows. A recent show featured Mike Meagher. You think you have it tough? Listen to the conditions Mike and his wife CHOSE to live in. OH! and you get three free sins for going there!

I hadn't gone to jordoncooper.com for a while but this one caught my eye... How to download Youtube videos.

Tall Skinny Andrew Jones has this rather "cool" visual... just go and look.
I am also thinking of moving this blog to Wordpress.com.... here is the link. I am running both blogs to see the difference in traffic. Let me know what you think.
I never realized that Montana was a "Catholic" state. Joe Martino has a post on this that was rather interesting.
Now, I also need some prayer. He have been evicted so that the landlord can renovate the house. He is cool and gave us three months, yet one month has gone by and still no place to move to. He said we could extend the stay if needed, yet we need to just get it done.
Also, I have been really struggling with dealing with some people (I confess that I just do not care to get into stupid debates with people who just are out to attack others) I am attempting humor to channel my anger... Let me know what you think.... the link was above.
I am also really desiring to go full time into ministry. I need prayer that God supplies our needs. I have a good job, yet it takes so much time and energy out of me... I just want to go deeper into what I see God wanting me to do. Pray that our church grows so that I can go full time as a pastor.
Also, iggyROCKS! needs support. I am getting asked by ministers from different countries for help with Grace related materials.... as well as being asked for study Bibles from students in Africa. One box i have been trying send cost me $186 just to send a two pound box. I am asking that you pray that God will not only supply the $400 to keep iggyROCKS! rocking but to also give a surplus that allows us to send these materials to these people. If you even know of a ministry that does already this let me know. Every dollar given goes directly to keeping the station going and these types of ministries.
Be blessed,
iggy

Carrying the Cross... emails from TES

TES, my beautiful wife, received a email going around. Here is the series of picture, below is the email exchange we about it. (You may need to click on it to see it better.)
From: Tes Shelton [mailto:] Sent: Monday, December 10, 2007 4:24 PM
To: iggy
Subject: RE: The Cross

Is this accurate? What is the cross that we carry? Or do we have a cross to carry?
From: iggy [mailto:iggy@wwdb.org] Sent: Monday, December 10, 2007 10:57 PM
To: Tes Shelton
Subject: RE: The Cross

I hate this one…

The cross we carry is two things.

One each must carry their own death and in that realize that being dead we need the Life of Christ to live… so on a small level this is true…

BUT!!!!
The other cross we carry is that we partake in Christ’s sufferings and our salvation is perfected… yet to fail in our sufferings does not mean we lose salvation, for that means it then becomes works salvation and not by Grace.

Love ya

I love you. I’m so blessed to have you as my husband. I love it that you study and think through why you believe what you believe. And, more importantly, that you let the Holy Spirit guide you and teach you His truth. I’m so proud to be your wife.

All I can say is I have a great wife!

How Will You respond to Homosexuality

This is a great article about how we should respond to the homosexual who knocks on your church door.

Be blessed,
iggy

One night while she was co-hosting The 700 Club, Sheila Walsh felt led to pray for homosexuals. Honoring the Holy Spirit’s prompting, she thanked God for His love for homosexuals and His desire for a relationship with them. She then invited all homosexual viewers to pray with her for salvation. When Sheila finished praying she encouraged those who had prayed with her to go to a church in their area, tell the pastor that they had asked Jesus into their heart, and say, “Sheila Walsh sent me.”

Sheila later received a letter from a gay man who had been watching the broadcast. He had asked Jesus into his heart, gone to a local church, met with the pastor, shared that he was gay and about the broadcast he saw. The pastor responded, “We don’t have room for fags in this church.” In his letter, the man shared that he was grateful to her, but that being a part of “The Church” was just not possible.

I have heard and told this story many times, but I still cringe when I think of that honest, broken, searching man who poured out his heart only to be rebuked by a pastor with a reckless tongue and un-Christlike heart. I wish I knew where to find him so I could share that all pastors and churches are not like that one and that God is not like the pastor he spoke with. Read more here (Sorry for forgetting the link)

Meeting People who read this blog.

In all honesty though it is rare, when I find someone who reads this blog I get a bit "worried"... now I know most people read me and may not comment... some do comment and say nice things... yet some say some pretty nasty things... yet...

Sometimes those who mean to "get" me do say something that I think is what I need to hear.

Today though I met a person who has been a reader for sometime. The funny thing is she and her husband have not commented... though they do read on occasion.

I think that much of her story matched ours... TES and me that is. It seems she was pregnant at the same times TES was... and that they moved a bit... much as our story.

Now the weird part... they know Dan Carter... as they are either friends with or related to Miss Sara's (who is now Mrs. Sara Carter) mother... (I think I have that right.)

But there is more!!!!

She also knew Levi and Bethany Fuson... who knew a couple from Wyoming who knew pastor Alan Hodges who pastors Vineyard Church here in Billings.

Now... this is there it gets interesting...

Scott and Tracy (the couple who I am referring to... though I only talked to Tracy) began reading my blog and were thinking about joining me when I was doing Word of Mouth Fellowship... which I gave up to join in the Vineyard Church plant we are currently with... they had attended the former Vineyard... and when they saw TES and I were then going to Vineyard they have joined us there.

So, one Sunday... TES was talking to Tracy and Tracy suddenly stated... "Oh! You are iggy's wife!" (And yes it was meant as a good thing! LOL!)

Now, it was fun to hear Tracy's perspective as she told me which posts she liked the most and how she prayed for me when some began to attack me on personal levels with their attack blogs.

It is a good feeling that some of you are out there... praying and are enjoying my crazy journey.

I confess I am not always the best example... I try to be good... really... yet it seems I am still human and in need of a saviour.

Now, the purpose was and has always been to tell the story of my journey of faith in this postmodern world. I will not change that. I think though that some that are being used of Satan have distracted me from my true calling. I am not saying I will not stand up for truth, yet I do hope and ask you who read to pray that I can focus more on the calling God has on me and my family. I hope that I can focus more on teaching and encouragement and less on this pseudo "war" that some have declared on "truth"...

I have had a very interesting day... not all "good"... but still in all the "stuff" I have been hit with lately... I see God's Hand in all and see that He is in charge and is so good to me.

Blessings,
iggy

And now the fruit of Lordship Salvation... by Jim W.

I received this comment from Jim W. who wanted to express the Love of Jesus and show me His great grace and mercy. I was overwhelmed by this as his expression to me of the loving kindness he displayed reminded me of how Jesus would be. I am truly thinking of changing to his way of thinking and converting to his type of religious Calvinism.

Here is his loving letter to me from this comment.

Jim W on July 24th, 2007

I see iggy is striking again and so far, no one is getting any further than they have any previous time.
iggy can twist any statement into a pretzel faster than a pretzel machine can.
“1. One accepting Jesus in a certain manner. meaning that they MUST accept Him as Lord… the bible teaches Jesus is to be our very Life… So I see that John right off the bat has added a “condition” to the grace that is freely given.”
John Mac doesn’t teach any works, iggy, no matter how much you’d like to believe it. Believing and accepting Jesus as Lord is part of our repentance. Understanding our fallen, sin nature is critical. If we do not grasp our utter inability to reach God on our own merit, we will never be accepted into God’s kingdom. recognizing that Jesus is Lord is part of this.
“2. John looks at man’s fruit as a way to see if one is “saved” or not… all men’s fruit is bad, we are all bad trees. God is the only Good Tree and we are called to bear HIS Fruit and not just polish our own. This leads to a performance and shame based faith that is not biblical”
We are not bad trees, iggy. Our fruit isn’t bad, either. Not once we are reborn into the family of Christ. We can still produce bad fruit by failing to do what God commands us to do, but if we are following God’s commands, we will produce good fruit. Examining a person’s fruit is exactly what is commanded in John’s epistles. No matter how much you would like to deny the rest of the Bible, it still applies to us.
To Tony and Quitin, have you read iggy’s blog about JM’s “Truth Wars”? This is a classic case of iggy-twisting if I ever saw one. He refers his comments to “Tall Skinny Kiwi” where there is a review of “Truth Wars”. In “Truth Wars”, JM refers to Jude where Jude compares false teaches to stained clothing. Kiwi infers this to mean that JM is comparing emergents to filthy clothes. iggy goes it even farther. He claims that JM is calling Jesus stained clothing. iggy takes it even further. I won’t even write what iggy says, but it calls Jesus stained underwear. Talk about twisting a comment to suit an agenda. And to even imply that someone who has lived a life devoted to God would refer to his (our) Lord as stained underwear is disgusting.
iggy, I’ve said it before, I guess I have to say it again: you’re a pathetic little man. You read with no comprehension and then insert your own thoughts into everyone’s writings. You truly need help. If nothing else, take a class on reading comprehension. That alone will help. Quit trying to read German mathmatians and esoteric philosophers. You cannot understand the things you read, so go back to basics.
BTW, nice equivocation on all your answers to Quitins questions. You answered everything while leaving yourself “outs” on everything. You can’t be pinned down to any position because of your postmodern mindset. You obviously have studied Tony Jones and Doug Pagitt.

I might state here that Jim W. makes an interesting accusation. He states that I made up the thing about being a stain on the garment of Jesus? That was what JM stated! Also, note that I answered these "certain" questions... Here is what i stated and my answers that Jim W. claims I gave myself an "out"... Take notice at what I did say... "All of these questions would need to be fleshed out much more and that would take more time that i want to take here on this blog." I think that great theologians have worked on these questions for an entire life time and Jim W. expects me to give full and complete answers here and now... He places his

Your questions:
Let me first state that these are not easy questions to answer. You are wanting a specific answer and i will fail at giving you THAT answer. All of these questions would need to be fleshed out much more and that would take more time that i want to take here on this blog.

2. Give me the emergent position. Give it clear.
a) What is sin?
Unbelief which manifests itself as disobedience.

b) How do people discover Jesus Christ?

By the calling of God through the Holy Spirit though it can happen in many ways.

c) What role does the bible play?

Jesus own words are this: “You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” So the scriptures role is to lead us to Jesus according to Jesus. In that it is the written revelation from God to man to help us learn by the guidance of the Holy Spirit of God through Jesus Christ.

c.1) Is the bible infallible?
In all that it speaks of yes.

c.2) Is the bible inerrant?
In all that it speaks of yes.

c.2) Is the bible true, for what it says, as it says it? Yes… which is what I have been trying to state to you throughout this whole thread.

Now, let me add this. I do not believe that there is any TRANSLATIONS of the bible that are infallible or inerrant… that does not mean I do not see that God’s written word is not either. I am willing to admit I struggle with inerrancy and infallibility as I see that the definition has changed from the time it was first used and how you are using them now. I am most certainly confident in the ability that God can overcome any shortcomings in bad translations. I am confident that God is true to His word. So i see even my struggle I am trusting God at His word and have placed my faith in Him. I trust Him completely.

AND THEY WONDER WHY I AM EMERGING!? Did you notice that James W. denies the words of Jesus who stated:

Matthew 7:17
Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

Matthew 7:18
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

Matthew 12:33
"Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.

Luke 6:43
[ A Tree and Its Fruit ] "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.

i will note that Jim misses this verse also:

Matthew 10:17 "As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 18"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone."

We bear good fruit only because we are engrafted onto the Good Tree... we do not bear good fruit on our own. It is that we are engrafted on the Good Tree we bear His Good Fruit it is and never was and never will be ours until we are clothed in perfection and are changed from perishable to imperishable. We must be totally dependant on the works of Jesus for He is our Sabbath Rest. Jim negates this by adding "works" and justifies judging others fruit... and sorely misses the plank in his own eye. He has seemed to have forgotten that no one is worthy, no one is righteous... and that we are at the mercy of God Who has give us His great Grace... Jim has forgotten that "Mercy Triumphs over Judgment".

In one breath Jim W. stated "If we do not grasp our utter inability to reach God on our own merit, we will never be accepted into God’s kingdom." And then denied we are bad trees that need to totally depend on Jesus to bear any good fruit. He states that it is by us "obeying" God. Yet, he misses that 1 John states what this obedience is:

23. "And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us."

He then showed me his love for me... yet God seemed to bring this verse to mind. 1 John 4: 15 - 21.

"If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
We love because he first loved us.
If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.
And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother."

They speak out both sides of their mouths... as I have stated before. I think these speaks volumes of the fruit of Lordship Salvation. Now excuse me I think I need a towel from all the frothing spittle baptism I just received.

I would rather be a "pathetic little man" than be one who has forgotten how great the grace of God is and that I owe all to God and should only give away God's forgiveness, mercy, grace, and love... and in that be justified as I do that for it is all by God's Holy Spirit... for the greatest gift is love. I know that I have to forgotten this great love at times... so I in no way condemn Jim White... but i hope he sees the error of his ways and turns to Jesus to bear God's fruit instead of trying to produce it on his own by attempting to please God by his own obedience.

Paul stated in Galatans 5:1 - 26

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.
You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope.
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?
That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. "A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough."
I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion will pay the penalty, whoever he may be.
Brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves! You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature ; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

In closing I also quote Paul in Galatians 3:1-5

Galatians 3

You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard?
Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing--if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?

I stand firmly in Christ who is the Author and Finisher of my faith and salvation.

Be Blessed,
iggy

From Darkness to Light

In my life I have at times I have gone through some dark periods… Sometimes these are self afflicted as I am not even trying to listen to the Master’s voice. I have for some reason always heard… yet unlike many who say they do not I hear, but I wish to not listen.

I often wonder at this… for as some teach I am to hear this inner voice less, yet the times I fall farther it often moves from a soft whisper to the desperate cry of one who sees a beloved child walk into traffic without a clue to its dangers…

I guess that is me at times… clueless… and set in purpose to be one who chooses to stop the voice… yet… even at the farthest reaches I found, that though the voice is al but silent… I know that there is a home… a Father Who though I be a soul that wanders too far knows he is loved…

I was very young when my father died. Around the age of two as I have been told. I do not remember the man who was my father; I am told he loved me. Somewhere though as I grew older, I lost what that meant… or felt like. I knew my mother loved me…. As mothers do and are supposed to… which is a great gift, especially if one never has known the love of a mother…

I once was lamenting of not knowing my father…and that I felt a bit put out… My friend looked at me and stated, “I think it is better to not know a father, than to have a father you know who beats you every night.”

This shook me.

You see, I had heard something of a different Father. Someone told me He would be a Father to the Fatherless… and for some reason I wanted that… more than anything… I desired to have that Father that I lost… to be able to know that there was someone who would be there, give me wisdom, teach me how to ride my bike, and if it break fix it… someone who would teach me to when to fight and when to stand… teach me how to thread a worm on a hook… and somehow, I learned all that… mostly by trial an error, yet always knowing that there was someone… this “Father” somewhere out there watching over me.

My family was not religious… or maybe that is what they were… religious… It was private and we just did not talk about it. We would go to church on Easter, Christmas, and… funerals and weddings… (if they happened at churches..) and an occasional baptism which I don’t remember ever going to… maybe I was outside playing or I never actually went to one until I was baptized as a teen… Though my mother assured me at that time I had already been baptized sufficiently and almost took it as I was saying she did not do a good job… I was too young what did I know… even now… what do I still know?

This Father haunted me… ever there. Never there. A phantom like in those comics like Ghost Rider… I felt secure and yet… not.

I decided that the voice was not real. This calling out was tiresome to one who has no idea who or what it is about. I started to medicate and seek “true love”. I wanted a girlfriend… someone to stand by me fight for me and love me even if I was totally wrong… I was young… what did I know of love… at fourteen I deemed myself unlovable and tried to kill myself by taking as many aspirin as I could… I stopped counting at 20… went downstairs laid on the guest bed, drank a beer and did not expect to wake up…

I never understood why I did not go to my room… maybe for fear they would not find me in my room… the guest bed was not in a bedroom but in an open room…

I woke up and heard my mother yelling that it was time for school… I rose and staggered to the stairs and yelled something… like… “I donth fleel soth goodt”. I felt like my entire body was on Novocain… I went back to bed and slept.

That was not the miracle... For the people who die of overdoes on aspirin die from liver failure from it trying to remove all of the drug. I was supposed to die about two days later… boom, drop on the floor… (That is what I was told later…)

Yet, that morning I had my first revelation… This Someone out there… this voice… it/He, whatever, had a purpose for me. I would from that day be on that search to find that purpose…

Mind you I had heard of Jesus at a bible camp… but as of yet, did not make a connection… Yet, God in Him mercy, introduced me to Him… I can only say at my younger age, I was chaos incarnate… and when I met Jesus, that storm began to calm… at times it still rages… I focus on the waves and curse Jesus for sleeping as the waves flood over the boat… I am rebuked… not in anger, but in His firmness and kindness as He will call me on my lack of faith, yet still calm that storm…

Life is strange… I found a Father through Jesus… I found a brother who tells me of my family…

My family is not religious anymore… we have found Love… and for some reason… religion seems to not stay around genuine love… it finds it curious and dangerous… Religion is like a boarding school. There is discipline and authority… and obedience is demanded… Fear is what fills the heart.

I am reminded of the words of 1 John 4: 18 – 19 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

We love because he first loved us.

As I walk in the Love the Father has lavished on me, I find I have been adopted into His family… I do not know all He is… nor all I will be, yet I do know that I will be like Him for I am now His son…

it was a huge mistake

it was a huge mistake

A little over a month ago I started a blog to watch the watchdawgs…

Now in reflection I see it was a huge mistake….and even more I see that in truth Christian Research Network is not doing any harm…

What?

You see they are focused on watching “other” ministries and not on doing the work of Christ… they are attacking other Christians, so for the most part are leaving the lost alone…

If they were focused on the lost, then that would be harmful… since at this point they want to be the judges of their brothers and sisters in Christ they can only harm us if we let them…. And unfortunately I have let that happen over the last few months.

In trying to respond to their hatred and judgmentalism, I found that something happened… I was becoming more and more like them… and that is the last thing I ever wanted. I found that I began to mirror their hatred and pettiness and instead of responding in kindness I only responded in kind.

Jesus has more for us than to “fight” in some self declared “war”… no matter how just we think we are. This world has enough war already and it seems that if we are to reach it, we need to not reflect it but to reflect the kindness and love of Christ… to give away the Grace and Mercy and Love that was given to us by Jesus’ death on the Cross and His Resurrection. This “truth war” is not about truth, it is about self righteousness… that one’s own view is more right than the other… in that what has been forgotten is that none of us is “right”, none of us is “good”… except God and God alone.

So, I will leave them at their war and walk with my Master in His way of Peace. I will strive to forgive when I have been wronged and even more to trust that even when things are said that seem so unfair or hurtful about me or others, is nothing compared to the hurt Jesus felt as He went to the Cross… not the beatings, not the nails, but the weight of my sins as He gave atonement and forgiveness to myself and all mankind.

Jesus came into the world to save it not condemn it… and many are no longer content with the “religious” side of Christianity… I receive emails almost daily from people who have come out of religion into new Life in Christ… in that they are changed people.

If we in the emerging church see ourselves as the people who are setting things right… we need to be even more aware and careful as to how we speak and respond to others. I recently was in a correspondence with a person who was very bitter at his relatives who mocked him as he was a fundamentalist… and it seemed we were getting somewhere…yet, I apparently said something wrong and in that he has decided not to continue our conversation… which is said… and makes me a little angry that some who are “emerging” cannot set aside their own pettiness and seek to be authentic… Yet, the fool I am understands as this is basically what I just have done myself these last few months.

I have deleted quite a few posts from my blog… not that they were bad, but I viewed them as not really being more than being accusations against those who lie… I hoped to set things straight… yet in that attempt now see that all I was doing was going tit for tat and adding to the fuel of the fire of gossip and vain arguments…

I wish to no longer participate…
I was told by someone that I was not in their league, nor could wear their shoes… I do think my response to be true… I do not care to be in their league nor wear their shoes… I do not care to be like them in any way… I desire only to become more like Jesus… and that is hard enough… it would be too easy to be like some… I choose to walk in Christ.

So, I confess to my readers… I have fallen and with the help of Christ now get up… and covet your prayers in that I can move on and away from the false “war” and bring the Kingdom by kindness and Love…. To those who are searching. I ask forgiveness from those whom I may have harmed.

Sometimes I wonder if my calling in life is to play the fool so others will learn from my mistakes...

If one thinks I am "tucking tail and running", then go ahead... Actually I am pressing in deeper into Jesus and deeper into the "real" fight for truth... which is the ministry of reconciliation.

Blessings,
iggy

Awesome testimony of God's Grace...

Awesome testimony of God's Grace...

I have gotten to know Henry (Rick) Frueh at CRN.Info and Analysis over the last few months. At first I was not sure where he was coming from...

I recently went to his blog and read a bit of his testimony... and was very blessed with how God can reach into the heart of a man and change him.

Be blessed,
iggy

Pride: In the Name of Love

Pride: In the Name of Love

I was thinking about “revivals”. You know those good ole fashioned “evangelist” comes to town in a tent and preaches on hell and damnation… we all get emotional and hope the person we brought is listening (as we are too often too afraid to actually engage that person ourselves so we use a hired gun)… or that we wished we had brought someone to hear this man and feel guilty for not doin it. We hoot and amen and have a good ole time… but then after he takes his “love offering” he goes out jumps in the Winnebago he came in and scoots off to another town… and….

Nothing else happens…

Oh there is a buzz in the air for a short while… but if you are lucky the person that did go forward (not the ones who always go forward for every little thing) might even start coming once in a while… and that is great.

I saw these “great” prophets/teachers/evangelist/authors/whatever come to town and everyone raves on their ministry… oh people got healed… or thousands went forward and got saved… yet if that is so, why has nothing really changed in our fair city?

I mean if these thousands went forward and received Jesus then there should be a BIG difference I your town right? But, most often than not… we see no change…

So, I remember passing out tracts, I loved the Jack Chick one’s as they had those cartoons. I bought hundreds of them and passed them out here and there… and not one person came to Jesus…

I witnessed on the street. Mostly to JW’s who would be rude to me as I showed them through scripture Jesus was not an “angel” but held the same title as God… both claimed to be the Alpha and Omega… I was great in my presentation for I learned from the master Walter Martin… you know the Bible answer man… I could not afford Kingdom of the Cults but I would go to the Library or bible book store and read it there for hours… I listened to every show I could catch of the “bible answer man”. It was hard as many places I lived did to even broadcast him… but I took notes as I did…and when I did.

Yet, again with all my witnessing I did not see “fruit”. I was busy but not bearing fruit… so I took on a rigorous self discipline schedule… I fasted and prayed and kept a journal… I prayed and kept myself separate and holy… (Notice how I phrased that?) And with all this added work… nothing happened… I began to wonder if I was not saved… or that God hated me… or worse… God was a liar.

My heart was angry and hurt… all I did for God and nothing.

I was Elijah in the cave… “I am the only one”…. And instead of God reassuring me that there were others… There was no answer.

I taught and read and prayed and did all I could… until I heard on the radio a man speaking of the Grace of God… and I hated him… I wanted to show him how wrong he was about all his fluffy gospel… he taught eternal security and twisted scripture all over the place to fit his view… but something began to happen… Like the story of the Grinch…my heart began to grow as I listened…. And joy would appear… but I would stuff it down with hate and anger… for God was a wrathful God and if you did not keep yourself pure He would have no qualms in casting you into Hell… He hated sin…. Yet I knew instinctively that God also loved the sinner… and desired him to turn… and little thinks like “it is God’s kindness that leads us to repentance” drove me nuts! I began an earnest study about Grace and eternal security… I read the man’s book… and it made sense… but it was not the Bible… so I read Galatians, and other books… but the one I knew backed me up the most was Hebrews. So I read it… and carefully kept each thought and chapter in context… and found Grace…

I was shocked! How could this be? I prayed and asked God to help me to understand what was happening… for if I accepted this as truth, then I lost everything… my position at church… face with the people around me and what few friends I had? what about my wife? Would she understand? I was the “spiritual leader” in our house… and how could I switch in mid stream my belief system?

I then heard a voice… which personally I hate it when people say that… but I did… and a question was set in my heart as if someone was standing in the room with me…A sheep knows his Sheppard’s voice… and sometimes I get these penetrating questions…

I feel like Peter, “Who do you say I am, Peter?” asked Jesus.

The voice asked… “What is keeping you from accepting what you have just learned?”

I answered… in one word… as if I had no choice… “Pride.”

That was a true revival... it has lasted for over 15 years inside of me... exchanging pride for the Name of Love...

The Truth shall set you free.

iggy

This is in the “Check this out department”…

This is in the “Check this out department”…

Over the years I have come across different artists that come to the Lord, the seem to either disappear, or get so pushed into the lime light that they seem to almost become propaganda for Jesus…

I was cruising the internet trying to figure out how to set up an aggregate “thingy” on my blog(s) and came across an article on Alice Cooper who over the last few years has been professing to be a follower of Christ… and wouldn’t you know it… on Christian Research Network… Alice is called an “emergent” and as usual questioned over if he really is a Christian… (Really I just to get those people there.) You see not only was I tricked into going to CRN and breaking my six day fast of them… I find they are setting themselves up as the Judge of others eternity… without even knowing that person!!!!!

Now, here is the site which is pretty cool as this person seems very balanced and bold in his interviews and articles… The article on Lenny Kravitz was what really let me know this guy was actually on to things. So, here is “Treasures of Darkness” (Weird name I know, but I think it is a reference to this verse Isaiah 45:3 I will give you the treasures of darkness And hidden riches of secret places, That you may know that I, the Lord, Who call you by your name
Am the God of Israel.")

Tom Cruise, new emerging Messiah...

I just thought I would use the word emerging in a different way than it is used normally on this blog... and to get some attention as to real issues out there that are destroying lives and hurting people...

First off, how reliable of a source if the Sun... I am not sure, but this article has been getting a bit of attention as of lately. Personally I view the article as big as farce as I view Tom Cruise and his ability to be a real person... I think he is so caught up in his own persona that the real person is lost...

So, what if though, Tom decides he is the "Christ" of Scientology? many do look to Tom, as well as other huge stars for direction in their lives. I find it funny that it seems that many discernment groups have take an unhealthy and judgmental stance against brother in Christ while religious groups like Scientology are growing bigger every day... yet it seems it is easier to do an in house fight than to actually face some that are really going to hell.

Tom is being held up and is out there standing for a lie... a religion that believes man is made up of millions of alien beings warring with each other for power and control... and that does not seem weird to anyone?

I do not see Tom's life as benefiting or being of any greater virtue than Paris Hilton or Briney Spears... as Tom has a record of failed marriages and relationships that seem to point that there is something just plain wrong he is not dealing with.

And that is the difference between a truth and a lie... In my life God has had a way of nailing me at times... placing me in a corner and then asking one of those questions that I really hate, but must answer in all honesty... It is at those times I have had to face the real me... that one that God still loves, yet wants to help me grow out of... I have written about some of those times... and I am sure I will write more in some time soon...

A false religion will in fact help one rationalize their sin... like in this article about Shi'ites' and religious prostitution to "help" young women to not have unwedded sex, and to help them from prostituting themselves... it is rather sad and poignant at the same time. It also makes me think as Rick Ianniello states:

"The article gave me pause to think of the ways we have compromised to put religious tradition (or worse, false notions of church growth, outreach, etc.) over truth."

BTW Rick, thank you for finding two articles i have been looking for, for some time now.

Seeing 3 dimensionally in a 2 dimensional world.

Seeing 3 dimensionally in a 2 dimensional world.

I have been exploring the thought of multidimensional thinking…

There are some reasons why some can’t understand emerging thought and I think it is not really their fault… so in that one must give grace to them.

In a multi dimensional world, we are fortunate to see in 3 different dimensions. I know there is more technical language to explore this… if one is able to understand Quantum physics, which I am not well versed in, you will be more able to explain this better than me…

But as usual I will have a very oversimplified model to look at here.

In a 2 dimensional world, it would be very hard to understand something simple like… a sphere. A sphere is easy to explain, right?

But to a 2 dimensional person, it would be a circle with a dot in it…

Two dimensional world view:

A one dimensional world view would be a simple dot…. Like this: .

Here is the point… let’s call “fundamentalism” the one dimensional view… they would have a tough time understanding your typical 2 dimensional view…who would be your typical “evangelical” and both would be hard pressed to grasp a sphere (Emerging Thought).

The reverse would be true, unless one has passed through the other view points to see a sphere and then grasp at one is they may not understand. Though once again, for a 3 dimensional person to go back and explain a sphere would also be hard pressed…

I believe this is the core of the issue that create a gulf between many of the arguments between pre-moderns, moderns, and postmodern and those anti-emerging and the emerging church. This of course can be bridged by Jesus… yet without Jesus we will never truly grasp as to what each of us can add to the overall conversation.

Often someone is in bondage to a teaching or world view that keeps them from seeing truth. So, if someone does not grasp what we believe nor understand the differing values of the emerging church… give grace…it is hard… but it is hard from their point of view… and if they even try to understand and extend grace to you… that is Jesus in action… so rejoice.

Blessings,
iggy

Do you suffer from a performance driven faith?

Do you suffer from a performance driven faith?

I did and at time still do suffer under the lie that I must be perfect to please God. Now, it is true that one must be perfect to please God, yet it is in the “how” that is error or truth based in our thinking.

I used to be in a major denomination. I was a bit of a rising star in my own way. This denomination’s ordination process is pretty ridged. I was about 23-24 and was at this point the janitor/youth pastor/ associate lay pastor/gopher. I worked a FT job and was paid $200.00 a month for my ministerial services. My mentor at the time was one of the most intelligent men I had met. His teachings were like a college level course in the detail he would lay down. I am very much like him in how I personally read and study scripture.

In this denomination one must sit before the ordination board and answer their questions. My pastor felt I had all the Bible knowledge I needed and decided to mentor me on the questions. He felt I did not need Bible College and should be set up as a Pastor right away as God had gifted me greatly.

Now, I am not telling you this to brag. Really instead the internal story was much different.

I was very smart, and very prideful in my knowledge. The Bible tells us that pride puffs us up. There was not a question I could not answer or a passage that gave me trouble until I met Grace.

God’s Grace that is.

I was only a short time away from going before the board… all things in motion. Then I began; or rather God began to work on my heart.

In my mind He showed me a picture of a high jumper. He was coaching others to jump and they did very well. He was a great coach. Then it was his turn to jump… and he missed the lowers rung. Again and again he tried and found he had to lower it every time. He was missing the mark every stinking time! I realized this coach was me!

I was in crisis. How can I tell others how to live, when I myself was not living by the same standard I taught? I realized I was a hypocrite and living sort of a schizophrenic life.

God has a sense of humor. At times in my life He has revealed this to me. He also has a way that when He talks to one’s heart, one can deny, run, or answer honestly His question. I began reading about eternal security of the believer. I was so sure one could cross that line and lose their salvation. (Please keep reading…even if you disagree, as I will explain my position on this in another post soon. This is my story from my experience and walk I do realize others are different). I also began to listen to a man named Bob George of People to People in Dallas TX. His view would enrage me and drive me deeper into scripture TO PROVE HIM WRONG!

I read his book Classic Christianity and hated to admit it, but it did seem to explain even clearer some tough passages I thought I already understood. Only difference was that instead of being about losing salvation, they were about and often against the teaching that one could lose salvation and against the people who taught that. In effect, as in Hebrews it talks of “crucifying Jesus over and over again to our shame”.

I began my journey out of a “shame/performance based faith” on toward a Christ Life or exchanged Life faith.

I then read Hebrews… very carefully keeping the contextual flow from beginning to end. If it said something was impossible in chapter 3 then it could not be possible in chapter 5 for example.

I read through how Jesus was greater than, Moses, Angels, and the Levitical Priesthood and “once and for all” died for our sins, and “once and for all” raised for us to receive eternal Life or Jesus’ Resurrected Life. If Jesus can never die, then as we are placed in Christ and are His Body, we will not die or perish either or we are saying Jesus resurrected Body is able to die again and again. We are also saying that His death was not enough to secure our eternity, as His death on the cross was not sufficient to be THE ATONING SACRIFICE ONCE AND FOR ALL.

I remember very vividly the question God asked me after I read Hebrews. He asked me, “What is keeping you from receiving what I have just taught you?” and I answered without hesitation, “PRIDE”. I was then broken down by God and He began to in a sense reprogram my mind and spirit. I realized I was reading the scripture through denominational lenses that tainted my view of Scripture as a whole. I began a new journey alone.

(More to come)
Blessings
